MES. Manufactoring Execution System.

Modern factory communication can be quite complex. To structure it, it is divided into up to four levels.

The ERP system in level 1 is enthroned above it all: it is used to handle the entire commercial operation and can also plan the resources of the entire production.

The MES in level 2, on the other hand, directly guides and directs production – i.e. the test equipment. It is subordinate to the ERP and communicates with it.

Sometimes a level 3 is inserted between the MES and the test equipment. This level contains stored program controls (PLC). They control and regulate complex mechanical production processes, e.g. in production lines.

The test equipment is located on the lowest level and performs the test tasks assigned to it.

Modern factory communication now makes it necessary for the test devices to receive their test orders and test plans from higher authorities, and vice versa to report the test results as well as test device status and personal data back to the higher authorities.

From customer to customer, the communication of the test equipment with the higher instances can be quite different. Some users prefer communication between the individual levels without levels to pass over. Others prefer communication between the test devices directly to the highest levels.
For this reason we provide a portfolio of interface solutions to support all cases of factory communication:

  • via TCP/IP to the PLC
  • via TCP/IP to MES | i.e, e.g. with OPC UA
  • via TCP/IP to ERP | i.e. SAP®
