Neutral Zone Testers
The neutral zone in a DC motor is a critical area for its operation and longevity.
The positioning of the carbon brushes in the neutral zone is crucial for preventing sparking at the commutator and maximizing the motor's efficiency:
- Sparking (Commutation)
When an armature coil is short-circuited by the carbon brush, the voltage in that coil should be as close to zero as possible. If too high a voltage were induced there, this would lead to a short-circuit current and severe sparking between the brush and the commutator segment. - Torque
If the carbon brushes are not in the optimal Neutral Zone position, the Motor also no longer has its optimal torque.
The Neutral Zone can be updated in the test field Motor adjusted.
However, the neutral zone tester also allows this to be done in a good approximation, without the Motor .
Key Facts:
- Neutral Zone Adjustment While the Machine Is Idling
- Very simple and safe adjustment
- It can also be used as a preliminary adjustment

Good to know:
Neutral Zone Adjustment
Adjusting theneutral zoneis not a test, but rather an adjustment procedure performed while the machine is at a standstill.
The test/calibration device is connected to the field winding and the brush bridge. The device evaluates signals that it generates in the field winding and detects at the brush bridge.
The testing device indicates how far the angular position of the brush bridge deviates to the left or right from the optimal neutral zone. By adjusting the angle of the brush bridge, the position is aligned so that the smallest needle deflection is achieved. The brush bridge is then mechanically locked into this position. This completes the procedure.
