high voltage test rail vehicles

Testing rail vehicles can be a very exciting business in the truest sense of the word. Exciting, because you sometimes have to deal with test voltages of up to 80 kV! And of course, this is accompanied by a high Test current. Therefore, high-power voltage sources are required for insulation tests on rail vehicles.

But the design of the high-voltage test device is also rather unusual compared to normal everyday laboratory work, because who wants to stand right next to an 80 kV system?
For this obvious reason—and often also for space reasons—a split device is the ideal design for such applications.

The testing device: Exceptional design – exceptional performance

The following images impressively show what a high voltage test rail vehicles can look like.
The testing device is divided into two units for this purpose. The unit in the foreground contains all the control electronics, including voltage adjustment for the high-voltage transformer. The unit behind it consists of the actual high-voltage transformer – supplemented by a cable reel and an extendable telescopic column. This telescopic column is used to lift the high-voltage test cable to the roof of the rail vehicle, where it is then connected to the pantograph. The opposite pole is the entire chassis of the rail vehicle. Other designs for feeding the high-voltage test cable can also be implemented here, for example, if the rail vehicle is supplied via a conductor rail from below, as is the case with suburban and underground railways.

Technical data of the application

  • high-voltage transformer 80,000 VACeff
  • Insulation of the transformer with insulating oil
  • Voltage measurement via integrated high-voltage divider
  • Test current to 200 mA
