Leakage current testers

leakage current testers are used to check the electrical safety devices and systems in accordance with standards. leakage current the current that flows through the insulation or capacitive couplings of live parts to grounded parts or to the housing. to ensure the safety people and devices, it must not exceed certain limits.

The leakage current tester applies a defined operating voltage to the device under test measures the current that flows through the protective earth conductor non-conductive parts.

Measurements are carried out in accordance with relevant standards such as:

Good to know:

The leakage current test

The leakage current test the amount of current that flows from the live conductors to protective earth conductor to parts of the housing due to weak insulation and/or construction-related factors. Various test specifications (e.g., VDE, EN, IEC, UL, etc.) prescribe the measurement and evaluation of leakage current.

Why the leakage current test is leakage current test important.

Electrical appliances can only be operated safely if they have a high level of electrical insulation resistance. In the worst case, poor insulation can lead to electrical accidents with serious injuries or even fatal consequences.

The electrical product is typically tested with a TEST VOLTAGE that is a percentage above the nominal voltage product, as specified in the standard. This value is often 1.1 times the nominal voltage.

What types of leakage current test there?

leakage current be measured in two ways:

The device under test in function.

    • The standard refers to procedure A.
    • This method is also known as the "warmleakage current test."
    • The TEST VOLTAGE fed in single-phase between the device under test connections L and N.
      • There are two options for feeding in electricity:
        • A1: L to phase – N to neutral conductor
        • A2: N to phase – L to neutral conductor
    • The TEST VOLTAGE fed in three-phase between the device under test connections L1, L2, L3, and N.
      • There are four options for feeding electricity into the grid:
        • L1, L2, L3, N / Normal state
        • open, L2, L3, N / fault condition
        • L1, open, L3, N / fault condition
        • L1, L2, open, N / fault condition

The device under test not in function.

    • The standard refers to method B.
    • This method is also known as leakage current test"cold leakage current test."
    • The TEST VOLTAGE fed between the bridged device under test L and N against the PE.

What are the typical standards?

Two standards are of central importance worldwide in Europe:

EN60990 – Method for measuring touch current and protective conductor current

    • Touch current on touchable metal parts of the test object
    • leakage current protective earth conductor the test object

EN60601 – Methods for measuring leakage currents in medical devices and systems

    • Touch current on touchable metal parts of the test object
    • leakage current protective earth conductor the test object
    • leakage current patient connections, etc.
    • Various types of patient leakage currents under a wide range of fault conditions
    • Various types of patient aid currents under a wide range of fault conditions
    • Measurement of leakage current with frequency components up to 1 MHz

SCHLEICH has SCHLEICH appropriate testing equipment for all European and global standards, such as UL, and their applications.

What are the "good/bad" criteria?

The leakage current test always evaluated based on the current level. It must not exceed an adjustable limit.

What is an MD?

The MD (Measurement Device) is a measuring circuit consisting of resistors and capacitors for determining the leakage current. In principle, it simulates the endangered person through whom the leakage current would leakage current in the event of damage.

The standards list various MD variants. All of these variants can be integrated into a SCHLEICH leakage current tester.

What is the substitute leakage current test?

The substitute leakage current test a cold leakage current test method B, but with TEST VOLTAGE reduced TEST VOLTAGE , for example, 40 V AC. The current flowing during this test is then extrapolated proportionally to the current that would nominal voltage at 110% nominal voltage .

How to find the right leakage current tester.

If you onlyrun the leakage current test your device under test , a single test device is the right choice. However, this already includes two test methods: the function test the leakage current test.
The function test required to voltage the device under test under voltage device under test procedures A1/A2.

If the device under test requires a more comprehensive safety and function check, we recommend our combination testers/multifunction testers. These allow various test methods, such as insulation, high voltage, and protective earth resistance test, to device conveniently device in one device . The test method switch in device that no test leads on device under test need to be manually reconnected device under test the test.

Thanks to the intuitive and convenient operation of our leakage current testers, every test is quick, precise, and cost-effective.
