calibration

Calibration in measurement technology is a measurement process for reliably and reproducibly determining and documenting the deviation measuring device or a physical measure of length from another device physical measure of length, which in this case is referred to as the standard. [Source: Wikipedia]

As part of the annual main inspection of a measuring instrument, all relevant test methods are calibrated and documented. If the measured values are within the tolerances defined by the manufacturer, the measuring instrument can continue to be used.

If there are unacceptable deviations, the measuring instrument can either be corrected by adjustment or must be repaired.
