In metrology, calibration is a measurement process for the reliably reproducible determination and documentation of the deviation of one measuring device or a measurement body compared to another device or any other dimensional embodiment, which in this case is called Normal.

During the annual main inspection of a measuring instrument, all relevant test methods are calibrated and documented. If the measured values are within the manufacturer-defined tolerances, the measuring instrument can continue to be used.

In case of impermissible deviations, the measuring instrument can either be corrected by adjustment or must be repaired.
